Thornes Independent Ltd is the longest established name in coach and bus travel in Selby, being founded in 1949.
A second and third generation family company it benefits from almost 60 years knowlege of the travelling needs of the local community. Operating Local Bus Services to the east of Selby and home to school transport in the East Riding and North Yorkshire enables our drivers to have a detailed knowledge of the area and become familiar faces to travellers on the routes. At the same time our vast experience much further afield means that our Private Hire Departmentcan confidently assist party organisers with suggestions and itineraries for proposed day outings. Our vehicles range from 33 seats through to 70 seaters. These single deck 70 seaters are ideal for school trips and are fitted with 3 point seat belts for additional piece of mind for parents.
Our comprehensive School Bus Network sees some journeys as registered local bus services enabling residents and students in isolated locations the opportunity to commute to places of education and commerce on a daily basis in term time. In keeping with this theme, the PATH Services ( People and Transport in Howdenshire) which we operate on behalf of East Riding of Yorkshire Council in a special wheelchair accessible bus offers a weekly lifeline to York, Hull, Doncaster and Beverley for villagers in the Howden locality.
Our expertise does not stop at sameday travel arrangements. Our Private Hire Team prides itself in the ability to put together Packaged Coach Tours for private groups to destinations both in the UK and abroad. A personal service which has built upon since our first overseas tour way back in 1973. Whilst for many people, travel by a modern air sprung air conditioned coach would be the norm, others reflect nostalgically on a bygone era when road travel was undertaken at a more leisurely pace. Two vehicles from our fleet date from the 1950s and have been refurbished to ' as new ' condition. For the past 10 years we have offered Classic Coach Tours in these period classics visiting venues with a heritage transport theme. Immensely popular these venerable veterens have plied the roads of The Shetland Isles, The Isle of Man, Southern Ireland, Belgium France and The Netherlands. They are also available for Wedding Hires - Nostalgia Outings Promotional Advertsing and TV work.
Our fleet has recently been boosted with the arrival of two new coaches. One being a 20 seat Mercedes Midi Executive coach the other being the largest single decker operated to date - this being a 12.8 metre long Volvo touring coach featuring - 53 reclining seats, Air Conditioning, floor level toilet and is fully wheelchair accessible.
